First Boeing 787 lands in Japan

TOKYO (AP) ? The first Boeing 787 landed Wednesday in Tokyo where launch customer All Nippon Airways will prepare the long-delayed aircraft for its inaugural commercial flight.

The plane took off from Everett, Washington Tuesday morning to cheering workers after a three-year delay in bringing the new wide-body jetliner to market. Boeing missed the initial May 2008 delivery target and had repeatedly delayed its introduction because of problems in development.

The plane goes into service on Oct. 26 with a special charter flight from Narita International Airport to Hong Kong. ANA will begin using the 787 on regular domestic routes on Nov. 1.

The new jet is the first commercial airliner built using carbon fiber ? a strong, lightweight, high-tech plastic ? rather than the typical aluminum skin. It is quieter and uses about 20 percent less fuel than a comparably sized aluminum aircraft.

Airlines have ordered more than 800 of the planes that will compete with the Airbus A350.

ANA, the world's eighth-largest airline by revenue, considers the 787 an important part of its global expansion efforts. Because of its extended range, ANA plans to use it on a number of new long-haul routes that were not commercially viable because passenger numbers weren't sufficient to justify larger aircraft such as the Boeing 747.

The 787 cabin will have bigger windows and larger overhead compartments. ANA also says passengers will be more comfortable because air pressure during flights will be equivalent to an altitude of 6,000 feet instead of the conventional 8,000 feet.

"This airplane has great potential for the future, and I feel that it will change things for the aviation industry," said ANA pilot Hideaki Hayakawa.

Bloomsbury venture to bring books "back from dead" (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? Bloomsbury Publishing, home to the Harry Potter books in Britain, launched its first purely digital imprint on Wednesday which it said would bring out-of-print titles "back from the dead."

Bloomsbury Reader has signed up a string of authors including Monica Dickens, great grand-daughter of Charles, politicians Alan Clark and Ted Heath, crime writer H.R.F. Keating and novelist Ivy Compton-Burnett.

The publisher is focusing on books which are out of print and where all English-language rights have reverted back to the author or the author's estate.

In several cases, for example Clark's famous political diaries, some of an author's work is still in print and remains with the original publisher. Those books that are not will be digitally published by Bloomsbury Reader.

"In my experience, if people read a book by an author and they love that author, they suddenly want to read everything by that author and that's where this can fit in," said Stephanie Duncan, digital media director at Bloomsbury Publishing.

"Once you've read every Inspector Ghote mystery then you think, well what else has H.R.F. Keating written, and that's where Bloomsbury Reader comes in because we'll be delivering all those books," she told Reuters in an interview.

Duncan added that the new venture was working closely with other publishers rather than competing against them.

COPIES HARD TO FIND

One hurdle for Bloomsbury has been finding hard copies of books that have been out of print for a long time.

"Talk about bringing books back from the dead," said Duncan. "It's actually, in some instances, a struggle to find a print copy that we can start the process with. In that sense it's sort of saving books as well for future generations."

Another challenge is to reach a big enough audience and make the works stand out in a marketplace that tends to be dominated by bestseller lists and "hot" new titles.

"The challenge is how do you get a book that's may be 50, 80 years old and find its audience," Duncan explained.

"I think digital gives a real ability to find that audience because of course word-of-mouth remains the strongest way to sell a book and digital word-of-mouth is quicker, its reach is wider, it's interactive."

Bloomsbury was initially approached by literary and talent agency The Rights House with the idea of setting up the new venture. It provided the publisher with a list of authors which Bloomsbury took on board.

Duncan then set about looking for new names, and the venture has the potential to expand, she said.

"In terms of types of books, I think things that do incredibly well (in e-book terms) are crime, romance, so of course we'd love to get lots of those types of books that are selling very well.

As well as e-books, the venture is offering readers hard copies if they ask for them.

"Print-on-demand" copies will cost just under 13 pounds in Britain or $20 in the United States, compared with e-books that will retail at just under seven pounds and $9 respectively.

And should a particular title prove particularly popular, Bloomsbury Reader has the option of bringing it back into print.

Bloomsbury estimates the digital share of its sales in terms of value at around 10 percent, but the publisher sees that growing to 50 percent by 2015.

"Print will remain an important part of our business and that will continue for a long time," said Duncan.

Boosting digital sales significantly is likely to be the launch of the Pottermore website dedicated to the Harry Potter phenomenon and where author J.K. Rowling will sell her wizard tales in e-book form for the first time.

$2.1 million reward paid to "Whitey" Bulger tipsters

$2.1 million reward: multiple individuals have reportedly shared the $2.1 million in reward money for their help in finding "Whitey" Bulger last June.

The FBI says it has paid a $2.1 million reward to tipsters for information leading to the arrest of fugitive Boston mob boss James "Whitey" Bulger and his longtime girlfriend.

Bulger was captured in June in Santa Monica, California, where he'd been living with Catherine Greig. Bulger, a longtime FBI informant, was wanted in connection with 19 murders.

The FBI had offered $2 million for information leading to Bulger's arrest of Bulger and $100,000 for information leading to Greig's arrest.

The agency said in a statement Friday that it paid the reward money to more than one individual. It did not identify them.

Authorities said previously that the tipster who lead them to Bulger was a woman who saw a television news report about a publicity campaign in the search for Bulger and Greig.

The couple have pleaded not guilty to multiple charges.

Abbas compared his campaign to the ?Arab Spring,? the mass demonstrations sweeping the Arab world in hopes of freedom, saying that an independent Palestinian state is inevitable.

?We have told the world that there is the Arab Spring, but the Palestinian Spring is here,? he said. ?A popular spring, a populist spring, a spring of peaceful struggle that will reach its goal.?

He warned that the Palestinians face a ?long path? ahead. ?There are those who would put out obstacles ? but with your presence they will fall and we will reach our end.?

The Palestinians want an independent state in the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip, territories captured by Israel from Jordan and Egypt in the 1967 Mideast war.

Israel says it?s ready for peace talks, but has rejected Palestinian calls to freeze construction of Jewish settlements in lands claimed by the Palestinians. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has also rejected Palestinian demands that the borders between Israel and a future Palestine be based on the 1967 pre-war lines.

Abbas last week asked the U.N. Security Council to grant the Palestinians full U.N. membership. The Security Council is expected to study the request for several weeks before making a decision, though the U.S. - Israel?s closest ally - has promised to veto the request if it proceeds.

As an alternative, the Palestinians say they will seek lesser observer status in the General Assembly - short of full statehood but a position that would allow them to join international bodies where they could push their agenda against Israel.

The United States, like Israel, says it is committed to Palestinian independence, but that direct negotiations, not a U.N. vote, is the only way to resolve the conflict.

A U.N. recognition will not change the situation on the ground, or resolve key issues like the fate of Palestinian refugees or the dueling claims to Jerusalem. But the Palestinians believe an international endorsement will boost their negotiating position should talks resume.

The international Quartet of Mideast mediators - the U.S., EU, Russia and U.N. - last week issued a statement calling for a resumption of peace talks without preconditions and a target for a final agreement by the end of 2012.

Abbas has signaled he will reject the Quartet?s plan, while Israel has hinted it accepts it.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? The Blockbuster video store chain is seeking some revenge against old nemesis Netflix by offering a less expensive way to watch videos online and rent DVDs through the mail.

The attack announced Friday is being mounted by satellite-TV provider Dish Network, which bought Blockbuster out of bankruptcy court for $234 million five months ago.

Blockbuster, once the video rental king, had filed for bankruptcy when it couldn't counter the threat posed by Netflix Inc., whose DVD-by-mail service and subsequent expansion into Internet video streaming revolutionized home entertainment.

Netflix now reigns as the largest U.S. video subscription service with about 24 million customers, but it's in a weakened position after raising prices as much as 60 percent and announcing the spinoff of its DVD-by-mail service as "Qwikster." Those moves, made in the past two months, have triggered a Netflix customer rebellion that Blockbuster and Dish Network Corp. are preying upon.

The lure: a DVD-by-mail and Internet video package that Blockbuster and Dish Network are selling for as low as $10 per month. That's the same price Netflix charged until it split its streaming service from DVDs.

But there's a big catch. To get Blockbuster's new "Movie Pass," you have to subscribe to Dish Network's pay-TV service. Dish Network currently has about 14 million subscribers, but only half have the right set-top box to stream video, said Ira Bahr, the company's chief marketing officer.

In an attempt to widen its audience, Dish Network is dangling a one-year offer for $40 a month that will include more than 200 TV channels and the Blockbuster Movie Pass. The company eventually plans to offer Movie Pass to non-Dish subscribers, but it provided no details Friday.

Movie Pass will roll out to Dish subscribers Oct. 1, accompanied by a marketing blitz.

It appears to be an ideal time to introduce the service because so many Netflix customers have been canceling their subscriptions and exploring other options. Netflix expects to have 600,000 fewer U.S. subscribers at the end of this month than it did at the end of June, only the second time in its history that it has lost customers from one quarter to the next.

The only other time that happened was in 2007 when Netflix and Blockbuster were locked in a fierce price war. Blockbuster eventually retreated, buried in huge losses and debt.

Dish Network executives described the timing of the new Blockbuster service as serendipitous. The companies, the executives said, had been drawing up their plans well before Netflix enraged customers with its mid-July announcement about the price increases.

"No amount of planning can replace good luck," Dish Network CEO Joe Clayton said. "We will take all the luck we can get."

Netflix still sees its service as a better bargain because it doesn't require a satellite-TV subscription.

"We don't require a cover charge," Netflix spokesman Steve Swasey said. "That (Movie Pass) isn't a good value."

J.P. Morgan analyst Doug Anmuth wasn't impressed with Movie Pass either. "We don't believe the service poses a compelling alternative to broadly compete with Netflix at this point," he wrote in a Friday note.

Although the Movie Pass will compete against other pay-TV and streaming services, Netflix is clearly the main target. As if to accentuate that point, Movie Pass was unveiled at a press conference in San Francisco, about 50 miles north of Netflix's headquarters in Los Gatos.

Dish Network is based in Englewood, Colo. and Blockbuster is based in Dallas.

Netflix, meanwhile, must also fend off other new competition, including streaming services from Hulu.com and Amazon.com Inc. and $1-per-day DVD rentals from Redbox kiosks. That's one reason Netflix's stock price has plunged more than 50 percent since mid-July. Netflix shares gained 90 cents Friday to close at $129.73.

The video selections available through the Blockbuster/Dish service and a combination package from Netflix/Qwikster are similar. Blockbuster/Dish offers more than 130,000 movie and TV show titles on DVDs and Internet streaming. Netflix had nearly 32,000 selections in its Internet streaming library last month, according to a Dish analysis, and Qwikster's DVD selections exceed 100,000.

Blockbuster/Dish, though, thinks its service has convenience on its side. Its subscribers will only have to pay one bill, unlike people who get their streaming from Netflix and their DVD rentals from the upcoming Qwikster website. And subscribers to the new Movie Pass service will be able to exchange the DVDs they receive in the mail at a Blockbuster store.

It just won't be as easy to find a Blockbuster store as it once was. Blockbuster now has about 1,500 U.S. stores, down from 9,100 at the end of 2004 when Netflix had just 2.6 million subscribers.

Many of the dead have links to organized crime, state officials said, but their gang loyalties are not yet known.

If they turn out to be Zetas, it would be the most brazen reprisal yet against the group, infamous for attacking a casino and massacring migrant workers, and could signal a new front in its battle with rivals in Veracruz.

While drug gangs have left their bloody mark on northern and western regions, Veracruz had been less affected until a few months ago and some now wonder if the Zetas' expansion could carry violence to even more parts of the country.

"It makes us very angry that this is happening, it makes us all feel impotent that these things are happening in Veracruz, which is a beautiful, peaceful state," said Isabel Hernandez, sales executive at the Costa Inn Hotel in Boca del Rio.

The Zetas, a paramilitary-style group founded by deserters from the army's special forces, are taking on more established gangs in turf battles. They have become one of the biggest challenges in President Felipe Calderon's bid to clamp down on the cartels, an effort that has left more than 42,000 dead in less than five years.

The group was once a small, specially-trained elite who protected the Gulf cartel's top brass but struck out on their own early last year and may boast as many as 10,000 members across Mexico, Central America and the United States.

They are blamed for the gruesome massacre of 72 Central and South American migrants last year and for firebombing a casino in the northern industrial town of Monterrey last month - an attack which killed more than 50 people, many of them women.

"The Zetas have become the focal point because of their extreme violence," said Eric Olson from the Mexico Institute at the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington, adding that the Veracruz attack "is a reminder that the other organizations are going to push back."

The public warning was signed by "Gente Nueva," an armed wing of the powerful Sinaloa Cartel that is run by Mexico's most wanted man, Joaquin "Shorty" Guzman. His gang, along with the Gulf cartel, may be bringing its fight with the Zetas further south down Mexico's eastern coast.

STRATEGIC PORT

A slender strip of land on the Gulf of Mexico, Veracruz state is home to some of Mexico's richest oil deposits, vast sugar cane and coffee fields and unusual racial diversity, due to African slaves who arrived at its ports.

A spree of recent attacks, though, has rattled inhabitants. Homicides skyrocketed to 249 this year, nearly five times more than in 2010, according to local media.

Drug bandits killed one man with a grenade in a popular part of Veracruz city last month and days later, a false rumor that gunmen were kidnapping school kids sent panicked Veracruz parents rushing to save their kids from harm.

Two people who sent warnings on their Twitter account spent weeks in jail accused of spreading terror, while violent criminals routinely slip through authorities' fingers.

More than 30 prisoners escaped local jails a day before the bodies were dumped in the upscale Boca del Rio district.

"There never used to be this type of conflict in the center of Veracruz," said academic Alberto Olvera from Veracruz University, adding that some people were now scared to leave their homes because of armed encounters in the streets.

"It was an organized massacre and leaving the bodies on a public road in broad daylight ... is a challenge to authorities as well as a settling of accounts."

Veracruz's busy port is a prime target for traffickers.

More than 1,600 trade ships docked in Veracruz last year and the tally of cargo containers leaving the port jumped roughly 30 percent from a year earlier, according to the Veracruz port authority.

Many are destined for the United States and Europe, and U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder this week said Mexico's cartels were using those trade channels to smuggle drugs.

LOS ANGELES ? Simon Cowell, a man who thinks big, is picturing his new singing contest "The X Factor" as America's No. 1 series.

The British music industry executive, TV star and producer wants to prove that the U.K. and international TV hit can play on what he considers the world's top stage, America.

For Fox, home of "The X Factor" and Cowell's former stomping ground "American Idol," his new show offers the chance to extend to the fall season the ratings domination reliably provided by veteran "American Idol" from January to May.

The test starts this week with the debut of "X Factor" at 8-10 p.m. EDT Wednesday and Thursday. Joining Cowell as judges are Antonio "L.A." Reid, Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger. British TV personality Steve Jones is the host.

The goal is never "the silver medal. You want to be No. 1, and over the next few months we're going to throw everything at this to make this the best show on TV," Cowell says.

Like a movie producer with his eye on a box-office hit, Cowell has attempted to fashion the ideal cast ? featuring himself, of course. Could he have a blockbuster in store? Roll credits for "The X Factor" and let the public vote.

Reid intends to use "X Factor" to find the kind of "great singers" he sees as absent from the music scene, citing Adele as an exception and a guiding light. "Shows like this are designed for talent like hers. ... Pure, pure singing. That's what's missing, and this opens the door for that."

? THE OLD FLAME: Abdul, the singer-dancer and former "American Idol" judge whose on- and off-screen adventures and off-kilter chemistry with Cowell make her a predictable component of the show's promised unpredictability.

"It's nice to be back in a demented relationship. It's like home," Abdul says fondly of reuniting with her old sparring partner and now boss. He's turned into a "pussy cat," she contends, but knows the kind of insights that will really score points.

"This is a real reality show, and you are going to get a real inside view without manipulation. ... You are going to see `what you see is what you get' and the good, the bad and the ugly, and I think it's a show that really gets behind the scenes as well," she says.

Music to Cowell's ears. But he was sold on Abdul, he says, when she showed up to discuss joining "X Factor" and was fit, healthy, informed and "didn't rely on the existing relationship."

? THE INGENUE: Scherzinger, a former member of the Pussycat Dolls who brings youth, J-Lo-style glamour and her own reality TV credentials to the table as a onetime contestant on "Pop Stars."

"I've been there. I can empathize with them," she says of the contestants. "I come from a different place of compassion and understanding."

She may cry, following the Abdul model. But even a softy such as Scherzinger knows the score. When she served as a judge on "X Factor" in the U.K., she was initially reluctant to say no to contestants, recalls Cowell. But she's wised up.

"I'm impressed by her professionalism and her ambition. She's a very, very ambitious girl and I like that in people," he says.

__ THE ROOKIE: Host Jones, a onetime model who segued to TV host on British programs including "101 Ways to Leave a Game Show" and "Drop Zone," and is making his U.S. series debut.
