Wednesday, February 3 ? The answer to the counseling programs on obesity and smoking is positive due to the fact that the programs are free, a new study has found. And the cost of the consultation made a difference not only to persons who may participate, but also to physicians and healthcare professionals that refer to programs, the study found.
Even when doctors are given a benchmark, 81 percent fewer patients referred by the Board and is obtained when the Board was not free.
?This study suggests that policy makers and taxpayers should support partnerships and Community clinics for the elimination of costs as a barrier to counseling to stop smoking and lose weight intensive,? the researchers wrote. ?Changing health behaviors is large enough for patients and doctors ? costs can be the turning point in their decision to abandon the effort.?
?Our quantitative and qualitative data emphasize that clinicians, patients not only are influenced by costs,? researchers at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond has concluded.
People have responded well to the programs of free advice to lose weight or quit smoking, according to the study, but participation has declined dramatically when the services are no longer free.
The researchers examined a program that uses a database online to offer advice to health care for adults with unhealthy behaviors. When the advice is free, 1,860 of 5,679 people who were evaluated were determined to have at least one unhealthy habit, and 407 of them have received referrals for intensive counseling, the study found.
But after the funding stopped, 729 of the 2,510 people who were evaluated were determined to have unhealthy habits, and only five were returned to the Council ? a decline of 97 percent in the benchmark, the study found.
The results are reported in the March issue of American Journal of Preventive Medicine.
