Many opera fanatics are practically drooling over the star-studded cast the Metropolitan Opera has assembled for its new production of Wagner's Die Walk?re, which debuts Friday.
In an age when Ring Heads (those obsessive followers of Wagner's four-opera cycle The Ring of the Nibelung, of which Walk?re is the second part) complain about the quality of today's Wagner singing, this list looks pretty tasty: Bryn Terfel as Wotan, Deborah Voigt as Br?nnhilde, Jonas Kaufmann as Siegmund, Eva-Maria Westbroek as Sieglinde and Stephanie Blythe as Fricka. And with any luck, James Levine will conduct. (You can read a clandestine account of how rehearsals are coming along over at Parterre Box.)
Opening night has sold out ? no surprise there. Don't have a ticket? Or simply pining for ye olden days of Wagnerian singing? You can console ? and perhaps confuse ? yourself with this little interactive puzzler below. We've assembled our own "traum-team" for Die Walk?re from Wagnerians of times past. Click on the music clip, then drag it to the image of the correct singer. Get them right and feel the force of the ring at your side. Get them wrong and feel the hot breath of Hunding at your neck.
