Wrestlers of all school ages took part in a Saturday clinic sponsored by the Orestimba wrestling program. For some, the clinic was an opportunity to hone their skills in preparation for the winter sports season; for others, the day represented an introduction to the sport.
Local wrestlers had the opportunity to refresh their skills and gear up for the upcoming wrestling season ? or to enjoy an introduction to the sport ? with a one-day clinic at Orestimba High School held Saturday.
The clinic was open to wrestlers in grades 1-12, providing a broad range of skill and experience levels.
Orestimba High wrestling coaches conducted the clinic.
?We?re trying to simply teach the fundamental aspects of wrestling,? Coach Rob Winters explained. ?The kids were pretty evenly spread with regard to skill levels. We?ve got some who have a ton of experience in wrestling and we have others who have never stepped on a wrestling mat before. Focusing on fundamentals hits everybody regardless of where they are talent-wise.?
Although the wrestling season doesn?t officially begin until after football comes to a close, Winters emphasized the late-summer clinic as a way for wrestlers to start thinking about how they need to improve for the upcoming year.
?This clinic setting gives the guys another benchmark for their training. Wrestling is a year-round sport and we try to push our guys, especially the high school athletes, to always be aware of their choices and how that impacts their wrestling,? Winters commented. ?The clinic gave an opportunity for the guys to weigh in and to go over some areas on the mat that they might need to work on in order to be more successful this year. We have to keep that spark there through football season so that when the wrestling season starts, our guys will be ready.?
In addition to working on fundamentals, the clinic was an opportunity to cultivate interest in the sport among newcomers, ultimately helping build the local youth and high school wrestling programs.
?We recently started a youth wrestling program in our community and this clinic hopefully introduced a couple of new faces to the sport who will think about joining up with us this season,? Winters stated.
About 25 wrestlers participated in the clinic.
